Houston and Killellan Men’s Shed takes top spot for West Coast (North)

Houston and Killellan Men’s Shed in Renfrewshire has been named the West Coast (North) regional winner in the Scottish Men’s Shed of the Year Awards 2025, run by the Scottish Men’s Sheds Association (SMSA).

Based at West Halls, Main Street, Houston, the Shed opened its doors in October 2019, just months before the pandemic disrupted its plans. However, the group persevered and came back stronger post-COVID—building not just woodwork projects, but lasting friendships and community spirit.

The Shed welcomes men of all faiths and none, providing a safe, welcoming space to meet every Monday and Wednesday from 10am to 1pm, where members learn new skills, share old ones, and enjoy companionship in a relaxed, supportive setting.

“We are absolutely delighted to be recognised as a regional winner,” said Jim McLaughlin, Co-Secretary of the Shed. “The Shed was designed to be inclusive and community-focused, and the vast majority of our members are not affiliated with the Church. It’s a space for everyone.”

Their video application showcased the Shed’s quiet but powerful contribution to village life. Members have donated their time, tools and talents to create meaningful change—crafting new signage for the church, assisting Houston Primary School with garden and equipment projects, and supporting intergenerational initiatives that bring people together across all age groups.

The group has also partnered with St Vincent’s Hospice to support male patients through hands-on sessions, offering connection, purpose and comfort. From building an Anderson shelter for VE Day at Johnstone Day Centre to helping local organisations thrive, their efforts have touched many corners of the community.

“Our members’ hands have built more than just structures,” said Jim. “They’ve built bonds, spirit, and a stronger village. We’ve never sought the spotlight—but it’s a real honour to be seen and appreciated in this way.”

Each of the five regional winners now go forward to the SMSA Board of Trustees who will decide on the top three going forward as finalists and to be voted upon by the SMSA individual members for the prestigious Scottish Men’s Shed of the Year 2025 national title. The announcement will be made later this year at the SMSA’s annual gathering, AGM and awards event on Friday 3rd October 2025 at Perth & Kinross Council Chambers and Civic Hall.

The fourth and fifth placed Sheds receive their regional title in addition to a certificate and £250 towards Shed running costs from the SMSA. The three finalist Sheds will receive their own regional title, targe trophy, certificate and an array of prizes and funds from the SMSA, and awards partners and sponsors to support their Shed.
