Men’s Sheds to ‘pop-up’ across Scotland at participating Scotmid stores on International Men’s Day

Carluke Men’s Shed popped up at their local Scotmid store in Law during Men’s Health Week in June 2022.

The Scottish Men’s Sheds Association (SMSA) has teamed up with Scotmid yet again to offer Scottish Men’s Sheds a promotional opportunity to mark International Men’s Day on Saturday 19th November 2022.

During Men’s Health Week 2022 back in June, the SMSA partnered with Scotmid to offer a full-day exhibition space to raise awareness of the Men’s Shed closest to the store and attract new Shed members. Following the success of this, the SMSA and Scotmid are repeating the opportunity for International Men’s Day and offering a ‘pop-up’ space (9.30am – 6.30pm) – to accommodate a 6ft table, banner and up to two Shed representatives – for the local Men’s Shed on Saturday 19th November 2022..

Lynne Ogg, Scotmid Community Manager (North region), said: “We are delighted to partner with the Scottish Men’s Sheds Association again to raise awareness of the benefits of Men’s Sheds in our stores to mark International Men’s Day this year.”

Armadale Shed exhibited at their local Scotmid store in June, Secretary Jan Pateman said: “We would like to thank the SMSA for organising this awareness day in conjunction with Scotmid. It gave us an ideal opportunity to chat to members of the public about what the Shed Movement is all about and what we do for both the community and members of the public. It also showed us that many residents had never heard of our Shed despite being in existence for six years so it was also a good public relations exercise. We were also able to chat to members of the community who have used our services and were singing our praises so it is great to know that we must be doing something right.”

As Scotmid has a ‘Charity of the Year’ partnership already in place, Sheds will not have the opportunity to fundraise, however each Shed can display and take orders for their Sheds products on the day.

Passage of Men – Andy Caine raising funds and awareness for Men’s Mental Health and Suicide Prevention

On Wednesday 5th October 2022, Andy Caine will set off from John O’Groats to walk 900 miles south to Land’s End to raise awareness of men’s mental health and suicide in the UK.

Over 10 weeks (weather-dependent), just a man and his back-pack, Andy’s mission is to initiate and take part in as many men’s groups as possible at each of his stops – to offer a friendly and welcoming space and opportunity for men to talk and share their life challenges and also invite them to join him on this walk of life if they wish to do so.

Men often feel like they have no-one to turn to and don’t talk or share how they are feeling and Andy was in this exact position three years ago when he faced challenging situations that had a detrimental effect on his mental health.

Andy said: “Three years ago I was faced with the realisation that I was in an unhappy marriage, a job that was pushing me towards burnout and a distinct dissatisfaction with who I was. I had little energy for my children and happiness tethered to material possessions, titles and a purposeless direction in life.

“I was displaying clear signs of stress through behaviours of anger, addiction to exercise, loss of appetite, poor sleeping patterns and the lack of ability to focus. I found it difficult to accept that I was struggling and face the shame of a failed marriage. Even admitting I was stressed felt vulnerable and weak.

“I became a recluse even to my own parents in their house. I retracted from all of my friendships and felt isolated in the shame and guilt. It felt like a downward spiral but not a big enough issue worthy enough to seek help. Some days I struggled to get out of bed and when I did I was confronted with a heavy sadness deep inside me. I couldn’t shift it and it felt like a viscous circle. It was only when I started to share my feelings with a close friend that I could see the light.”

Join Andy on this ‘walk of life’ journey

Andy invites people to join him for as much/little as they can on this journey. You can walk with him and/or put him up for the night with free accommodation, donate through JustGiving, get him a cup of coffee (or an umbrella!) and ensure the funds he raises can support as many men’s health charities as possible.

Follow Andy’s journey and/or get in touch with him through Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.

Scottish Shortbread maker supports Men’s Sheds awards

Nothing goes more hand in hand in a Men’s Shed than some banter over a brew and a good biccy and that is why the Scottish Men’s Sheds Association (SMSA) has teamed up with award-winning Scottish shortbread maker, Dean’s of Huntly, as they sponsor the ‘Scottish Men’s Shed of the Year’ Awards 2022.

Dean’s – the leading premium manufacturer of the best shortbread, biscuits and hand-baked products for over 47 years – is supporting the prestigious awards that showcase Scottish Men’s Sheds and all they have to offer their members.

SMSA CEO Jason Schroeder said: “We are pleased to announce Dean’s as an awards’ sponsor this year. Our annual awards recognise and reward the life-changing impact that Men’s Sheds are making across Scotland.

“The Men’s Sheds Movement is a thriving global phenomenon where Sheds are now well recognised as a place where men aged 18 or over can go to socialise in a healthy way. These safe and friendly spaces are evolving to meet the needs of their members locally and offer so many activities and opportunities to improve the health and wellbeing of men in our communities.”

Dean’s Commercial Director Nick Watkin said: “We are delighted to support the SMSA and the ‘Scottish Men’s Shed of the Year’ Awards in their fourth year. In addition to this, we will be providing the top three finalists with shortbread hampers to encourage Shedders to get together for that all-important chat over a cuppa. Now more than ever, community spaces like Men’s Sheds that reduce social isolation and loneliness must be supported.”

Last chance for Sheds to apply for this year’s ‘Scottish Men’s Shed of the Year’ Award 2022

The awards event will take place on Friday 18th November 2022 and Scottish Sheds, that are members of the SMSA, have until midnight on Sunday 18th September 2022 to apply online through the SMSA website.  The winner and two runners-up will then be announced to the public on Saturday 19th November 2022 to mark and celebrate International Men’s Day.

The SMSA was formed in 2014 to provide support, information, advice and resources to its Shed Members and 3,000+ Individual Members. Today, there are over 200 open and developing Men’s Sheds groups across Scotland reaching 10,000+ men (aged 18 or over) through the Movement. MAN SHED, the show about Sheds, debuts at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August

Moray-based professional theatre company Right Lines Productions is delighted to announce its brand-new production will debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August as part of the Pleasance Theatre Trust’s Edinburgh National Partnerships programme.

How does a man find his purpose when he grows old and major life events come thick and fast? Should he retire to the solitude of The Shed as usual and escape from the world, or get out and try something new? When the familiar rules no longer apply, is it too late to change the habits of a lifetime?

Man Shed is a bitter-sweet one-man theatre piece which explores the joy of sheds, the pain of loss and the comfort of friendship. The play has been inspired by Men’s Sheds around the world, but more specifically by the work of the Scottish Men’s Sheds Association.

Man Shed is written by Euan Martin, directed by Dave Smith, and produced by Right Lines Productions. Writer Euan Martin from Right Lines said: After an extended period of inactivity due to the pandemic, it is fantastic to be presenting live theatre once again. Man Shed was due to premiere in May 2020, but because of the national lockdown, the tour had to be cancelled. We were fortunate to be selected for the Pleasance Edinburgh National Partnerships programme, supported by Eden Court Theatre, Inverness.  This will allow us to present Man Shed in one of the most prominent and prestigious venues at the Edinburgh Fringe.”

Susannah Armitage, Senior Producer at Eden Court Theatre, said: “Eden Court is delighted to be supporting Man Shed by Right Lines as part of our inaugural involvement in the Pleasance Edinburgh National Partnership project. Man Shed is a very touching and pertinent tale about loneliness, friendship and where you find community. It is also warm and funny and will speak to lots of different audiences and we are sure that it will do well at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Right Lines have long been established as a theatre company making and touring work across the Highlands and we are really pleased to be collaborating with them in this context.”

The Edinburgh Fringe run at The Pleasance marks the world premiere of the show. The show previews on the 3rd and 4th August and continues until Monday 29th August (with the exception of Wed 10th, Mon 15th and Mon 22nd August).

Tickets for the 60-minute show are available from www.pleasance.co.uk/event/man-shed/performances

SMSA attends a professional reading of ‘Men Don’t Talk’

On Saturday 7th May 2022, SMSA’s CEO Jason Schroeder and Development Officer Tim Green attended the reading of ‘Men Don’t Talk’ co-written by Clare Prenton and Peebles and District Men’s Shed.

Jason Schroeder, SMSA Chief Executive Officer, said: “I had the privilege of attending this professional reading of Men Don’t Talk at the Duns Play Fest. The play is an important and vital thread in the much needed understanding and reweaving of a new cultural story. If we are going to continue succeeding in creating a healthy and thriving world for everyone we need to have these types of opportunities to witness, experience and discuss what needs to change and how we can create the changes together. Clare Prenton and Peebles & District Men’s Shed have triumphed on behalf of us all.”

Tim Green, SMSA Development Officer, said: “The actors (including award-wining Billy Mack, Dougal Lee and Greg Powrie) did brilliantly capturing the characters we meet in the Sheds.

“The script managed to encapsulate the magic that goes on in Sheds in a warm, humorous and authentic way. Many of the lines echoed conversations and moments I’ve experienced over the last three months visiting Sheds all over Scotland. I felt very at home during the performance and I know many men, and Shedders in particular, will feel the same.

“Clare is now seeking funding and interested producers, programmers and venues to tour the play across Scotland and beyond. Let’s hope plenty more folk get to see the play!”

Inaugural meeting of the Global Men’s Shed Forum

On Monday evening (28th February), SMSA CEO Jason Schroeder and SMSA Chairman David Gardner will represent the Scottish Men’s Sheds Movement at the inaugural meeting of the Global Men’s Shed Forum—an alliance of international Men’s Sheds associations.

The SMSA will join representatives from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States and Wales on Zoom to discuss ‘Where are Sheds at right now?’ and ‘What do you see on the horizon for Sheds in your country?’.

The SMSA will continue to keep our members and supporters updated on the progress and outcomes of this new Forum.

Story Wagon—coming to a Shed near you?

The Story Wagon is a touring arts space providing free creative writing, story-telling and reading facilities and activities to communities across Scotland.

The founder of Story Wagon, Luke Winter, is a writer that makes stories happen. Luke said: “I moved to London in 2013 to do freelance work and that is where I began busking with my typewriter. I started to write stories for people in the streets to make them smile.

“On my return to Scotland in early 2020, I noticed that the high street was unfortunately not as popular as it used to be so I decided to look for funding to create a ‘space’ that could pop-up in town squares and outside community centres to enable me to talk to people and let them write and share stories.

“I got in touch with Jason at the SMSA to chat about how Scottish Men’s Sheds and Shedders could become involved with the Story Wagon project but unfortunately, the pandemic put those plans on hold.

“Making the wagon through lockdown was a brilliant experience. The wagon is the end result of so many talented and generous people. We had many craftsmen and volunteers involved in the build and utilised various types of wood including Ash to make the front doors, Douglas fir to form the back gable along with pitch pine. We also recycled and repurposed materials where possible to give them a new lease of life.

“In August 2021, we had our first-ever outing in the wagon in Skye and it has grown from there. We have been popping up all across Scotland and our travels have taken us to Castle Douglas, Edinburgh and Paisley to name but a few.

“The Story Wagon is now a sanctuary for everyone to get creative and express their stories. It is a welcoming pop-up writing den that provides desk space, cups of tea, typewriters, voice recorders, books and good old-fashioned paper and pen.

“It hosts a programme of writing, reading-out-loud and storytelling activities. Its large veranda can be unfurled to provide sheltered outdoor arts activities.

“We are excited that as part of Visit Scotland’s Year of Stories 2022—a national programme of more than 60 in-person, virtual

and hybrid events—the wagon will be hitting the road to tour and are reaching out to Sheds to see if there is interest in them becoming involved in this journey.

Scotland’s Year of Stories 2022 will celebrate stories inspired by, written, or created in  Scotland. We all have a story to tell and the wagon is here to help everyone share them with others.

“Touring will take place from the end of March until the end of October and I would love to hear if Sheds would like the wagon to ‘pop-up’ near them to see their members. Shedders are also very welcome to join in on the Scotland’s Year of Stories events where the wagon will be featured.”

For more information on the Story Wagon and to see photos and videos from the wagon build project, please visit the website at www.storywagon.co.uk and follow its journey on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

*THIS EVENT HAS NOW PASSED

The aim of this cross-nation event is to demystify social prescribing* for Men’s Sheds, through presentations of Shedder experiences, recent research findings and a panel discussion and opportunity for Q&A.

  • Panel Discussion and Q&A

This event is a cross-nation collaboration organised by Dr Bryony Porter (University of East Anglia), Dr Dani Hutcheon (Glasgow Caledonian University) and Aisling McGrath (Waterford Institute of Technology) who have each worked on research projects with Men’s Sheds.

IMPORTANT NOTE

In advance of the event, the organisers are asking attendees (especially Shedders) to complete a small questionnaire to harvest their knowledge on social prescribing. If your Shed has experience of social prescribing, please complete the questionnaire to share your thoughts to support the event discussions on the day.
