Largs-based Shed wins West Coast (South) regional title in Scottish Men’s Shed of the Year Awards

Clyde Coast and Cumbraes Men’s Shed has been named the West Coast (South) regional winner in this year’s Scottish Men’s Shed of the Year Awards, run by the Scottish Men’s Sheds Association (SMSA) charity.

Based at the Brisbane Centre on Bath Street in Largs, the Shed is open to members every Tuesday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm, offering a welcoming space where men of all ages and backgrounds can come together to connect, create, and contribute. This year marks another major milestone for the group, who now officially own their building—a remarkable achievement that secures the future of the Shed and reflects the deep commitment of its members and the generosity of the local community.

“Our Shed has gone from strength to strength this past year,” said Shed Secretary Andy McNeill. “Owning our building is a huge step forward, but what truly defines us is the positive impact we’ve made in people’s lives. We’ve built more than walls—we’ve built trust, friendships, and a sense of belonging.”

The Shed has grown into a vital community hub, forming strong partnerships with groups including the Women’s Institute, Boys Brigade, Douglas Park Group, and local schools. Members have contributed to community events like the Largs Viking Festival and supported nearby towns, creating planters for the West Kilbride Community Group.

Their activities extend well beyond the workshop: the walking group explores near and far—from visits to other Sheds, to trips to Oban, Yorkshire, and even a voyage on the Waverley paddle steamer. A guitar group brings music, fun, and new friendships, while the Shed’s Burns Suppers and Christmas lunches—generously supported by local businesses—have become highlights of the Shed’s social calendar.

“Whether it’s helping someone fix a chair or find companionship after a loss, the Shed is often the first port of call for locals seeking more than a repair—it’s a place for purpose and connection,” said Andy.

The Shed has also become recognised as a source of wellbeing support, receiving referrals from local doctors and job centres. It provides a safe, inclusive space where individuals can build confidence, learn practical skills, and be part of a caring community. Stories like a father and son reconnecting at the Shed show the deeper human value behind the workbench.

With ongoing support from local professionals, new storage facilities, and plans for internal improvements, the Shed continues to evolve as a beacon of compassion, creativity, and community spirit.

“The Largs Shed is a shining example of what a Men’s Shed can be,” said Jason Schroeder, CEO of the SMSA. “It’s more than just a workshop—it’s a social lifeline and a powerful force for good in the local community. From owning their building to welcoming referrals from GPs, they’ve created a space where lives are changed through connection, compassion and purpose. We’re proud to recognise their achievements with this regional award.”

Each of the five regional winners now go forward to the SMSA Board of Trustees who will decide on the top three going forward as finalists and to be voted upon by the SMSA individual members for the prestigious Scottish Men’s Shed of the Year 2025 national title. The announcement will be made later this year at the SMSA’s annual gathering, AGM and awards event on Friday 3rd October 2025 at Perth & Kinross Council Chambers and Civic Hall.

The fourth and fifth placed Sheds receive their regional title in addition to a certificate and £250 towards Shed running costs from the SMSA. The three finalist Sheds will receive their own regional title, targe trophy, certificate and an array of prizes and funds from the SMSA, and awards partners and sponsors to support their Shed.
