Manifesto
The Scottish Men’s Sheds Association (SMSA) charity launched a powerful manifesto urging politicians, funders, and communities to recognise and actively support the vital role Men’s Sheds play in improving men’s health and wellbeing across Scotland.
As the leading voice of the Men’s Sheds Movement in the country, SMSA outlines six key actions that stakeholders—from government bodies to local communities—can take to ensure the sustainability and growth of these life-enhancing spaces. These actions aim to unlock the full potential of Men’s Sheds as hubs of connection, purpose, and wellbeing for men aged 18 and over.
At the heart of the manifesto is SMSA’s bold vision: that every man in Scotland will one day have access to a local Men’s Shed and the opportunity to attend if they choose. These Sheds offer more than just a place to gather—they foster friendships, reduce isolation, and promote mental and physical health through shared activities and community engagement.
Jason Schroeder, CEO of SMSA, emphasised the need for strategic investment and long-term support:
“Investment and support to lead change is required to underpin the ongoing creation of this health-by-stealth and voluntary social wellbeing pathway for men.”
To realise this vision, SMSA is calling for the following six key actions:
- Investment to lead change
- Localised support to be embedded across the Shed network
- A start-up and development fund to help new Sheds get off the ground
- A national awareness campaign to highlight the benefits of Men’s Sheds
- Improved outreach to the Armed Forces, Veterans, and Blue Light services
- Delivery of preventative men’s health sessions in Scottish Men’s Sheds through SMSA’s Shed-Wise workshops
SMSA remains committed to driving meaningful change—empowering thousands of men (our sons, brothers, fathers, uncles, and grandfathers) and their communities to contribute to a broader shift toward a wellbeing economy. Through continued advocacy and grassroots action, the Association pledges to be a catalyst for healthier, more connected lives across Scotland.
