Glasgow Caledonian University launches toolkit to help roll out Men’s Sheds across the UK

Glasgow Caledonian University has launched a new ‘toolkit’ to help increase the number of Men’s Sheds across the UK after research showed they improve the mental and social wellbeing of older men.

The community spaces offer the chance for men to take part in practical activities, such as woodwork, metalwork, model making or gardening, and are credited with tackling loneliness and social isolation.

Originating in Australia in the 1990s, the number of Sheds in Scotland has increased from one in 2013 to more than 190 today. There are more than 1500 across the UK and Ireland.

Researchers at GCU have been working with Men’s Sheds in Scotland to make the movement financially and socially sustainable, as part of a project backed by the National Lottery Community Fund.

It’s resulted in a new ‘toolkit’ for communities, a guide full of information on how to access funding, source sites, set up committees, run services and offer social activities.

Dr Danielle Hutcheon, research associate at the Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health at GCU, said: “The Sheds offered a lifeline for a lot of people struggling with social isolation and loneliness, especially for men who live alone or are carers.

“What we’ve seen with the Sheds being closed, since March last year, is a real decline in men’s health and wellbeing.

“A lot of the Shedders we spoke to only left the house a couple of times a week to go to the shop or to go to the Men’s Shed. That was the only social contact they had throughout the week.

“Going to the Shed gives a lot of the men a sense of purpose, they treat it almost like a job. It gives them a sense of confidence and value in their lives that they didn’t have before.

“The key to the success of the Men’s Sheds is men’s ability to talk ‘shoulder to shoulder’, while doing a task, rather than sitting face to face in a lunch club or a pub. It’s a relaxed, informal, welcoming environment.”

The toolkit, created in partnership with a range of stakeholders, including the Scottish Men’s Shed Association, Scottish Government, and Age Scotland, will be made available throughout the UK and Ireland.

Dr Hutcheon added: “It comes at an important time. There is a lot of competition for funding at the moment. The toolkit will hopefully help Sheds expand, survive and sustain.

“There’s no doubt the Sheds are having a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of a hard to reach group of men.”

Case study

Bill Core

Bill Core is a co-founder and trustee of Barrhead Men’s Shed, which opened in 2014. He’s 78-years-old and used to work in the furniture trade.

Barrhead’s Shed has 58 members and is based in an industrial unit in the town.

He said: “When I was semi-retired, I remember sitting in the house fed-up, thinking to myself what is my life going to be like when I’m fully retired? What the hell am I going to do?

“It’s fine in the summer if you can get out and do things but, in the winter, when the weather is bad, it can feel as if the walls are closing in. You find yourself looking up into the sky and thinking how long do I have before I’m up there?

“The Shed gave me a purpose to get up in the morning, it was a place to go to meet people like myself, keep busy, have a laugh and enjoy myself.

“The guys look forward to coming and arrive with a smile on their face and leave with a smile on their face.

“You get satisfaction from helping other people, from keeping minds active. A lot of members had high powered jobs in the past, there’s a real cross-section of society.

“I thoroughly enjoy making clocks from chunks of wood. I get an immense amount of satisfaction from it. Some of the stuff we’ve produced has been donated to local schools and nurseries, so the whole community is benefiting from the Shed.

“If anyone is sitting at home and thinking they would like to come along my advice would be put on your coat and do it. You won’t regret it, it will change your life for the better.”

New format for Sheds applying to the Scottish Community Alliance’s Learning Exchange grant program

Shed members of the Scottish Men’s Sheds Association (SMSA) qualify to apply for accommodation and travel costs, to share ideas and learn from other Men’s Sheds across Scotland, through its membership agreement with the Scottish Community Alliance’s Learning Exchange grant program.

The Community Learning Exchange is a fantastic opportunity for communities to learn through the exchange of ideas and the sharing of common solutions.  When community groups make visits to other communities, the most valuable part is often meeting new people with similar interests and gaining new insights and perspectives on shared challenges.  Visiting groups come away armed with new ideas and approaches, and host organisations have the opportunity to explain their project to a new and interested audience, often seeing their own projects afresh through new eyes.

Changes to the application process

The Scottish Community Alliance (SCA) has announced some changes to the way applications to the Community Learning Exchange are processed. The new protocol for this grant funding asks for interested parties to now make contact directly with their SCA member network—in terms of Scottish Men’s Sheds, this is the SMSA—in advance of applying to ensure that the network has knowledge of the application and is willing to endorse it.

The SMSA will then automatically receive an email when the application has been received by the SCA. Once the application is approved, the SMSA will then receive a Grant Acceptance Form to countersign to provide evidence of its endorsement of the grant.

What will the Exchange fund for SMSA member Sheds?

Community to community visits—up to 100% of the travel and accommodation costs of a visit by members of one community to another community project up to a limit of £750. For more information on the Community Learning Exchange, please click here.

Potential grants for Sheds through the Business Temporary Closure Fund

**PLEASE NOTE: This fund has now closed**

The Scottish Men’s Sheds Association (SMSA) is urging Men’s Sheds in Scotland to take the time to look into this ‘Business Temporary Closure Fund’ opportunity, through their local authority, to check if grants are available in your area and if your Shed is eligible.  Please note that Sheds with charity rates relief can apply.

SMSA has recently been made aware of three Sheds in the Borders that are already in receipt of this grant (backdated from the 26th December 2020).

The Business Temporary Closure Fund offers a grant of £2,000 or £3,000 (depending on rateable value) for businesses required to close by law for the duration protective measures are in place:

  • £2,000 for premises which have a rateable value of up to and including £51,000; or
  • £3,000 for premises which have a rateable value of £51,001 or above

Eligibility will depend on the level of restrictions which are in place at any point in time in the location of the business premises.

The grant is available for business with premises registered for Non-Domestic rates as at 1st November 2020. Business that pay rates through their landlords may also apply, and local authorities may request documentation proving this, such as a lease or a rental agreement, or other evidence showing that the applicant is explicitly or contractually liable for charges associated with non-domestic rates for the property.

Local authorities have the discretion to award grants to eligible businesses which lease or rent premises which are not rated, such as those leased from a council in a public park, provided they are satisfied with the validity and eligibility of individual cases.

Funds will be payable every four weeks in arrears for the duration measures are in place.

The fund is administered through your local authority and this opportunity is worth exploring to ensure there is not an application cut off date.

If your Shed is successful (or unsuccessful), please do keep SMSA informed at comms@scottishmsa.org.uk

Crisis Grants For Scottish Men’s Sheds

***PLEASE NOTE: THIS FUND IS NOW CLOSED***

As part of the Scottish Government’s winter package funding to tackle social isolation and loneliness, the Scottish Men’s Sheds Association (SMSA) has secured vital funds to support Men’s Sheds in crisis in Scotland.

The £30,000 emergency pot will assist Sheds, most severely affected by the pandemic, that are struggling with financial pressures and/or facing closure to ensure they are still here to support Shedders when they are able to safely open their doors once again.

Jason Schroeder, SMSA’s Executive Officer, said: “SMSA is delighted to have secured this crisis grant funding for Scottish Men’s Sheds through the Scottish Government.  Covid-19 forced our Sheds to close temporarily, calling a halt to much of their fundraising activities and this is impacting heavily on their income generation.  This fund will support new and existing Sheds, large and small, to cover core running costs to offset this lost income.  We will aim to help those Sheds in crisis to give them the peace of mind to ensure they are still here in the future when Sheds will be needed most.

“A huge area of concern is how this pandemic has impacted on people’s health and wellbeing and we need to ensure the survival of our Sheds for when men can attend them again, hopefully in the spring time. This funding has the potential to do so much good.  We will strive to stretch it as far and wide as we can to prevent any closures.”

The fund is now open for SMSA Shed Members (click here to join for free) to apply online through the Association.  Sheds can apply for core running costs (e.g. rent, heat and light, insurance etc) to keep them open in the upcoming months.  Priority will be made to Sheds with an unrestricted funds bank balance of less than £1,000.

Small premises now eligible for £10,000 grants.

Properties occupied by charities can now apply for the £10,000 Small Business Grant Scheme to help with pressures caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The extension of the scheme is expected to result in an additional £31 million being made available to more than 3,000 small properties occupied by charities – including day centres, workshops and halls. It will apply to properties which are in receipt of any Charitable Rates Relief or Sports Relief, but are otherwise eligible for the Small Business Bonus Scheme.

Finance Secretary Kate Forbes, said:

“Our package of business support is under constant review as we look for improvements that can be made to existing schemes, or any gaps we are able to fill.

“It had become clear that many charities which run small premises, such as day centres and halls, had been hit hard by loss of revenue during the pandemic. This is particularly pressing for small and medium-sized charities which deliver health and social care support, and are heavily reliant on income from their retail operations.

“In order to support these vital charities we have therefore taken the decision to open up the Small Business Grant Scheme to allow them to apply for grants of £10,000 on the first eligible property and £7,500 on any additional eligible properties.”

SMSA Shed members – Road Trip to Learning

The SMSA are members of the Scottish Community Alliance which comprises of the countries leading community based networks. The Community Learning Exchange opportunity funds their partners members like our Shed Members to learn through the exchange of ideas and the sharing of common Solutions. You can apply for accommodation and travel costs.

After an SMSA Shed ‘upskilling’ presentation day in Saltcoats the men decided a road trip to visit Scotland’s first Men’s Shed at Westhill, Aberdeenshire would be a great opportunity to learn from the men running the oldest Scottish Men’s Shed. The next day they visited the Inverurie Men’s Shed which has a different set up and learnt from them as well.

Pictured here are the N Ayreshire, Garnock Valley Men’s Shed visiting Aberdeenshire’s Inverurie Men’s Shed. Lots of wisdom shared from the East coast where it all started as the West coast of Scotland gets their Sheds going.
