Making a Difference in Our Lives

About Us

The Scottish Men’s Shed Association was launched in November 2015 with the aim of helping new and existing groups to set up and run a Men’s Shed in their local town or community. We are here to give a helping hand to anyone looking for assistance or more information on what it means to develop and run a Men’s Shed.

These web pages contain information we hope will be useful to help you to develop your plans, speak to the right people about funding and premises and on how to approach people with your ideas for your Shed.  You will see what worked in the past for other groups and could help to provide potential funders or councils with the facts and figures you might need to make the strongest case you can for a Shed in your community.

We are not here to tell you how to run your Shed or what you can and cannot do with your volunteers or community groups, we are simply here to give you as much help and guidance as we can, drawing on our experience setting up and running Sheds in Scotland to make yours operate as smoothly as possible.

Our Vision from the Chair

Inspiring and supporting Scotland’s Shedders.

We already know from our experience in Scotland and from other countries that men who are involved in Men’s Sheds report living healthier, happier and more connected lives.

Men’s Sheds respond to men’s need for camaraderie and provide opportunities to work together in a way that contributes meaning to their lives. The pioneering of the Men’s Sheds concept in Scotland since 2009 by some of the SMSA has led to Scotland’s communities in 2015 voicing a need for a dedicated association which inspires and supports all of Scotland’s Shedders with its lifelong and life wide learning experience.

The Scottish Men’s Sheds Association became a Scottish charity in 2014, launched in 2015 and here we are in 2018 as the peak association for Men’s Sheds in Scotland. Our main source of national support is this online website. This is for our communities and individuals who might want to start a Shed, make their Shed different or share some of their wisdom and documents with us, to share with others. We will keep adding to the individual members resource library as we find and receive new information. We will also keep striving for better deals and support for our existing Sheds and Development Groups with our partners. Our conferences will bring us all together, for a catch up, meet new Shedders and share good practice.

We will continue with our successful one day training sessions for Community Development Workers and new Shed groups across Scotland. We are sharing the ‘SMSA Men’s Shed Development Process’ which is being successfully used across Scotland. The official newsletter of the SMSA , The Scottish Shedder launched in 2017  has been very well received and we look forward to continue hearing from you so we can promote all the good things happening in your Shed.

We will strive to lobby our MSP’s, Councillors and Scottish Councils to support our Scottish Men’s Sheds Movement both financially, in kind and in policy making. This grass roots, community empowerment Men’s Sheds model is a new way of supporting the desired Scottish Governments National Outcomes and the Community Empowerment and Engagement-Asset Transfer Bill. Men’s Sheds in our opinion are one of the best ways for Scottish Councils to save money and allow their buildings surplus to requirements or under used to be transferred to the Community as a Men’s Shed.

For the last four years we have achieved our brave SMSA goals by volunteering our personal time to this national Vision. The Scottish Government have recognised our efforts and in September 2016 allocated us some start up funding until March 2018. We hope this will be continued for the 2018/2019 year so we can continue supporting the Scottish Men’s Sheds grassroots movement and developing this brilliant community empowerment model across Scotland.

It is our desired outcome that all people who wish to support the Men’s Shed movement and the SMSA will use this online resource, our social media and a chat with us to keep you moving forward as quickly as possible in leading active lives, building your community and making a difference. In short – get those Shed doors open, put on the kettle and let the good times roll.  It’s not going to happen unless you do it.

We look forward to welcoming you into our Membership and hopefully in the coming months and years we will stop by to applaud your amazing efforts and enjoy a cuppa, a good chat and a laugh in your local Shed and all over Scotland.

All the best Shedders and our supporters.
